The Advancement Via Individual Determination (A.V.I.D.), a long standing program in the district was cut this school year.

“Because of the budget the program was cut,” Early College Counselor, Mrs. Sherri Carlson said.

Every year the district had to pay a fee for the program.

“We had to pay a yearly fee and it came out close to one million dollars,” Assistant Principal, Mr. Dominic Pena said.

Although the fee was costly the A.V.I.D program was designed for students to get the  necessary skills to be successful in a college setting.

“Basically it was a program to get students college and career ready,” former A.V.I.D Coordinator, Ms. Kendra De la Garza said.

The class had also given freshmen in the early college program a chance to earn college credit. But, there is a new class available for college credit.

“We have incorporated a new public speaking class which has a lot of the A.V.I.D techniques,” Carlson said, “This will also turn into a college class second semester.”
