On April 14th, a 5K was hosted to raise awareness for domestic abuse. Members of both the powerlifting and volleyball programs participated in the run as well as members of the community.

“I chose to participate because I believe we need more awareness on domestic abuse. It needs to stop being something that is seen as normal,” senior Pamela Arce, said.

In order to helping raise awareness, volleyball coach Deanna Dominguez began the 5K to honor a close friend who was murdered as a result of domestic abuse.

“Once I heard the story, it made me realize the closest people to you could be victims. It helped me enjoy running by knowing I was doing good for those who are affected by it,” Arce said.

By the end of the 5K  all the participants gave back to the community by showing people you can get out of domestic abuse. The runners shed light on an important issue.

“I felt very proud of myself for putting my dislike for running aside to bring awareness against domestic violence,” Arce said. “This made me feel empowered, to give a voice to those who didn’t have it.”
