As she stepped onto the scale, her heart pounded in her chest. The anticipation was
overwhelming, and a wave of nerves washed over her. Numbers and calculations ran through
her mind and she couldn’t help but wonder if she had done enough to meet the required weight.
Making weight was crucial and the scale stood before her as she braced herself for the truth.
For powerlifter Jade Guzman, making weight is important.
Leading up to the competition day lifters take several steps to make sure their weight is on
track. Guzman plans her weekly meals, selecting just the right amount to align with her
weight goals while having enough to fuel her body for the intense training she pushes
through to gain the strength she needs.
“Making weight is about discipline. Having to make meal preparations, be aware of what
you’re eating, and make time to do cardio for the weight I need to lose is a need of making
weight. But in the end it’s all worth it as I can perform the sport I love,” Guzman said.
Making weight directly impacts an athlete’s ability to excel and increase their chances of
victory.
“Making weight is a need for preparation. It helps us be able to have a fair competition and
perform in a way that could bring good results in a meet” Guzman said.
