Last week the varsity football team played against the Mercedes Tigers at home. The varsity team dominated the game winning with a score of 45-18.

45 points is a pre season high. The previous game against Rivera was also a high scoring game only off by one point.

“45 points has been the most points since I’ve been at Edinburg high; it goes back to a reflection of our athletes,” Head Coach, Mr. JJ Leija said.

Overall the team had an outstanding game.

“The team played well offensively, defensively and in special teams. We had a complete game going through all four quarters,” senior, Matt Cruz said.

On the defensive side, sophomore, Emmanuel Duron contributed to the score with an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

“The interception was about a 35-yard return for a touchdown and after that I was pumped up and excited,” Duron said.

However, every victory is all based on team effort.

“Everything we do is a total team effort. I wouldn’t be anything without my O-Line. It’s like I always emphasize ‘No line, No Shine’,” senior, Hearlin Benavides said.

The team continues to look forward to the next challenge.

“We are willing to work hard because we haven’t achieved anything yet,” Leija said. “It’s not how you start, but how you finish.”
