Varsity football team gets comeback win against Harlingen South

The Bobcat offense prepares for the play against the Harlingen South Hawks.

In an exciting non-district competition, the varsity football team beat the Harlingen South Hawks with a score of 34-21 during their first home game.

With the first two quarters being scoreless, the Bobcats had to come back more aggressive after half-time. It isn’t over until the clock says 0:00 in the fourth quarter.

“We needed to be an aggressive team,” Head Coach, JJ Leija said.

During the kickoff in the third quarter, momentum changed when kicker, Emmanuel Duron caused the returner of the opposing team to fumble the ball.

“I saw an open gap towards the opponent, so I took the opportunity,” Duron said. “ I hit and caused him to fumble.”

The team went on to recover the ball with this play giving them assurance that they were still in the game.

“This play helped spark some light into the team and made both the offense and defense come alive the rest of the game,” Leija said.

Another big play occured when Senior, Hearlin Benavides made a 79-yard run.

“It honestly pumped everyone on the team up; everyone’s momentum went up and we were ready to win the game,” Benavides said.

The team continued to strive until the end and pulled out the win making it a memorable one especially for the seniors.

“It was the start of my senior season and I had to start it off with a bang,” Senior, Raymond Quintanilla said.

Overall this game helped the team gain much insight and pride.

“ I think this game was an eye opener for many players and we are very proud of our athletes,” Leija said. “They never gave up, and they took pride in what they did”.
